Uranium Project

Uranium in the Foley area is in part hosted in the Mea Arkose Formation, the basal sandstone of the Karoo’s Ecca Group. The Mea formation extends throughout the Foley project, dipping gently (<5°) to the west. In addition, the base of the shale-rich Tlapana Formation, which overlies the Mea and extends into Foley, is also recognised as hosting significant uranium mineralisation.

Uranium mineralisation in the Letlhakane Gorgon area to the south of the Foley licence is, in-part, associated with paleochannels, which are ancient river channels. These channels, often identified as paleo-topographic lows on the basement geologic surface, are characterised by thick accumulations of coarse sediments. Such sedimentary environments are conducive to the concentration of higher-grade mineralisation due to the physical and chemical conditions present in the channels.

To identify and test these potential uranium-rich zones, Eastport’s exploration strategy “mapped” the paleo-topography by examining the unconformity between the overlying Ecca sediments and the basement rocks. This mapping identified several paleo-channel targets. Each will then be tested by systematic drilling to determine the presence and extent of uranium mineralisation. By targeting the paleo-channels, exploration efforts can focus on those areas of the project with the highest potential for economically viable uranium deposits.

Importantly, infrastructure in the region is excellent, with power, transport, and skilled labour all in proximity.
